Phu Chi Fa is a mountain promontory and viewpoint in Chiang Rai province in northern Thailand, located near the border with Laos. The peak is famed for a narrow cliff-edge viewpoint that offers dramatic sunrise views over the surrounding valleys.

The main attraction is a short walk to a prominent cliff ledge that provides a wide outlook toward the Mekong valley and distant ridgelines; visitors gather at dawn to view the seasonal sea of mist. Trails to the viewpoint are short but can be steep in places and the site has basic accommodation and camping nearby operated by local authorities and communities.

The area is part of a forested highland landscape and has been developed for nature tourism while retaining rural character. Visitor infrastructure is focused on the viewpoint and short nature trails rather than large-scale facilities.

Phu Chi Fa sits on the eastern edge of the Thai highlands in Chiang Rai province, close to the Laos border and forming part of a ridge system above the Mekong basin.

  • Best time to visit: Best visited at dawn during the cool season when temperature inversion commonly creates the sea-of-mist phenomenon across the valleys.
