Phocaea
Archaeological Site Ancient Ionian city ruin on Turkey's Aegean coast
An ancient Greek settlement on the Aegean coast near modern Foça, Phocaea is known for classical ruins, maritime archaeology and long coastal history. Visitors combine archaeological sites with fishing‑village cafés, rocky coves and sea views.
Phocaea is the ancient Greek settlement on the Aegean coast that corresponds to the modern town of Foça in Izmir Province. The site includes visible remains of harbour installations, city walls and scattered archaeological traces from its Greek and later periods.
The area served as an Ionian coastal polis in antiquity and later experienced Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine occupation layers. Maritime and commercial activity have shaped its character over millennia.
Remains include stretches of defensive walls, quays and ruined structures along the waterfront, with medieval town fabric clustered nearby. The modern town of Foça retains a small harbour and historic buildings built atop the ancient settlement.
Phocaea is located on Turkey’s Aegean coast, roughly northwest of the city of İzmir, and is reached by road from the regional towns along the shoreline.
How to Get to Phocaea #
Phocaea refers to the ancient site near modern Foça on Turkey’s Aegean coast, northwest of İzmir. Foça is reachable from İzmir by intercity buses and frequent minibuses/dolmuş services departing from central İzmir terminals; by car the coastal drive from İzmir to Foça takes roughly an hour to 1.5 hours depending on route and traffic (distance ≈70 km). Once in Foça the ancient remains and seafront are within short walking distance of the town centre.
Tips for Visiting Phocaea #
- Visit in spring or autumn to avoid high summer heat and the busiest coastal tourist crowds while still enjoying good weather for exploring the ruined city and shoreline.
- Start from Eski Foça (Old Foça) harbour to combine the visible coastal ruins, harbour fortifications and the old town rather than just viewing the site from a distance.
- Avoid mid-afternoon on peak summer days when the town centre gets crowded; early morning gives quieter access to shoreline ruins and better light for photography.
