Phewa Lake is a freshwater lake in the Pokhara valley in Gandaki Pradesh and a central recreational and scenic focal point for the city of Pokhara. The lake is frequented for boating, lakeside promenades and views of the nearby Himalayan foothills.

A small island near the lake centre contains the two-storey Tal Barahi Temple, which visitors commonly reach by hired boat; the lakeside area contains piers, cafes and guesthouses. The lake is used for short day trips, sunrise and sunset photography, and as a base for excursions into the Annapurna region.

The lake is set against the backdrop of mountain faces such as Machapuchare and other Annapurna foothills, which are visible from the lakeshore on clear days. Local tourism infrastructure supports boating, lakeside dining and short guided walks around the shoreline.

Phewa Lake sits immediately west of central Pokhara city in Gandaki Pradesh, at the foot of the Annapurna foothills. The lakeshore is accessible on foot from Pokhara’s main streets and is a short drive from the city airport and bus terminals.

  • Boating access: Small rowboats and motorboats operate from lakeside piers and are the main way to reach the island temple and enjoy shoreline views.
  • Best light for photos: Sunrise and sunset over the lake provide clear reflections of nearby mountain slopes on calm days and are popular for photography.

What to See #

  • Tal Barahi Temple (lake island): A small island near the lake centre that contains a two-storey pagoda temple widely visited by locals and tourists for worship and offerings.
  • Lakeside promenade and boat piers: The lakeside promenade, boat piers and waterside cafes that form the principal visitor area and launch points for rowing and motor boats.
  • Mountain viewpoints: Views across the water to the nearby mountain faces, commonly used for sunrise and sunset photography of the surrounding peaks.

How to Get to Phewa Lake #

Phewa Lake sits in the Lakeside area of Pokhara and is reached on foot from hotels and shops along Lakeside Road. From Kathmandu the drive to Pokhara along the Prithvi Highway is roughly 200 km and takes about 6-8 hours by bus or car; there are also frequent domestic flights from Kathmandu to Pokhara Airport (about 25 minutes), after which the Lakeside/Phewa Lake area is a 20-30 minute taxi ride or a short local bus trip.

Tips for Visiting Phewa Lake #

  • Go at sunrise or late afternoon for calm water and the best reflection views of the Annapurna/Machapuchare range; calm mornings give the clearest mirror-like photos.
  • Use the small boat docks along Lakeside to reach Tal Barahi temple or to cross to the Peace Pagoda side-taking a short boat trip to the pagoda then hiking up gives a quieter panoramic viewpoint few people combine in a single visit.
  • Avoid the busiest Lakeside strip at midday by exploring the quieter northern and western shores or taking an early-morning boat to catch birdlife and local fishermen before tour boats dominate the water.
