Peyto Lake is a glacially fed alpine lake in Banff National Park, Alberta, located along the Icefields Parkway in the Canadian Rockies and known for its striking turquoise water. The lake is fed by meltwater carrying fine rock particles that give the water its vivid colour.
A well-constructed viewpoint a short walk from the parkway provides the most photographed view and an accessible platform for visitors; the site is a popular stop on drives between Lake Louise and the Columbia Icefield. Trails from the parking area lead to overlooks and shorter walks; summer and early autumn are the busiest seasons.
The lake was named for Bill Peyto, an early mountain guide and park warden in the region, and it sits in a classic glacial valley carved by ice. The surrounding landscape is high alpine terrain with moraine and glacial features, and the Icefields Parkway provides the main road access.
Peyto Lake is located within Banff National Park on the Icefields Parkway (Highway 93), in the Canadian Rockies of Alberta; it is served by the parkway that links the Lake Louise area to the Columbia Icefield corridor.
- Best viewpoint and time: The main viewpoint is a short walk from the Icefields Parkway parking area and offers the classic aerial view of the lake and its glacier-fed headwaters. Mid to late summer is when the lake's turquoise colour is most vivid.
- Why the colour changes: The lake's colour is caused by glacial rock flour suspended in meltwater, not by algae or paint-conditions vary with meltwater flow and light, so the colour intensity changes through the season.
How to Get to Peyto Lake #
Peyto Lake is located on the Icefields Parkway (Highway 93) in Banff National Park; pull off at the Bow Summit / Peyto Lake turnout and parking area. From the parking area the main viewpoint is a short uphill walk - typically around 5-15 minutes along a signed trail to the overlook.
The lake is reached by car on Highway 93 from Lake Louise/Banff direction; on long-distance trips it is commonly visited while driving the Icefields Parkway between Lake Louise and Jasper. There is no public road directly to the lake other than the Icefields Parkway.
Tips for Visiting Peyto Lake #
- Arrive at the Peyto Lake viewpoint off the Icefields Parkway at Bow Summit early in the morning to beat tour buses and get the best, calm-water reflections and turquoise colour from glacial melt.
- Park in the official Bow Summit/Peyto Lake lot and follow the short, steep trail to the main viewing platform; if the main deck is crowded, walk a little further along the ridge for a quieter vantage point with different angles of the lake.
- Check seasonal access: the Icefields Parkway and the Peyto viewpoint can be snowbound in shoulder seasons and the lake's vivid colour peaks in late spring-summer as glacier melt rises.
Best Time to Visit Peyto Lake #
Best visited in mid-summer (June-September) when access is open and the lake's glacier-fed color is at its best.
