Petexbatún Lake

Petexbatún Lake is a lagoon-like lake in the Petén Department of northern Guatemala associated with the Petexbatún region, an area rich in Classic Maya archaeological sites. The lake and surrounding wetlands are integral to the landscape of several important Maya settlements.

The shoreline and surrounding forest contain remains and viewpoints for nearby archaeological sites; travel in the area is typically organised as archaeological or ecological excursions rather than mainstream tourist infrastructure. The landscape includes marshes, forest and ancient urban ruins clustered around the lake.

During the Classic period the Petexbatún region supported powerful Maya polities with major centers such as Dos Pilas and Aguateca on or near the lake; the area figures prominently in studies of Classic Maya political dynamics and collapse. Many of the archaeological sites around the lake were occupied and fortified in the first millennium CE.

Situated in southwestern Petén Department in northern Guatemala, the lake lies within lowland tropical forest and is accessed from regional towns and archaeological operation bases in the Petén.
