Peter and Paul Fortress
Museum Historic fortress on Zayachy Island, St Petersburg
Peter and Paul Fortress anchors Zayachy Island in St. Petersburg, containing the Peter and Paul Cathedral where Romanov tsars are buried, fortress museums and riverfront promenades. Guided tours explain its 18th-century origins.
The Peter and Paul Fortress is a historic walled citadel on Zayachy (Hare) Island at the centre of St. Petersburg, founded by Peter the Great in 1703. It is the original core of the city and contains the Peter and Paul Cathedral, the burial place of Russian emperors.
The complex includes the cathedral with its tall gilded spire, museum exhibitions about the fortress and the city, and the remains of prison bastions. The site is used for guided tours, museum displays and seasonal cultural events; the cathedral’s interior and the city views from the walls are principal draws.
Originally built as a defensive fortification and naval base, the fortress later housed a prison for political and high-profile prisoners and evolved into a museum complex in the 20th century. Over time its role shifted from military defence to heritage preservation and tourism.
Situated on an island in the Neva River, the fortress occupies a central position in St. Petersburg’s historic core, adjacent to the riverfront and within easy walking distance of the Hermitage and Palace Square.
- Best time to visit: A daily ceremonial events schedule and changing exhibitions in the fortress museums make mid-morning or early afternoon the most active visiting times.
- Central location: Located on Zayachy (Hare) Island in the Neva River, the fortress is within walking distance of central St. Petersburg museums and the Hermitage complex.
What to See #
- Peter and Paul Cathedral: The cathedral is a tall Baroque structure with a needle-like gilded spire and contains the burial vaults of most Russian emperors from Peter the Great onward.
- Trubetskoy Bastion prison (ruins and exhibits): A former prison within the fortress limits that once held political prisoners; parts now form museum displays about the site's penal history.
- Museums and exhibitions: The fortress complex includes the State Museum of the History of St. Petersburg, showing the city's development from its foundation to the present day.
Tips for Visiting Peter and Paul Fortress #
- Start your visit early in the morning to explore the island's sights before river-tour crowds arrive; the Peter and Paul Cathedral is best seen first to avoid queues for the tombs of the Romanovs.
- Head straight to the cathedral and the fortress museum on arrival - they are the core attractions and can fill up later when cruise passengers arrive at St. Petersburg's riverfront.
- Allow time to walk the fortress walls and the small museums (the Trubetskoy Bastion prison exhibition and the mint are inside) - these quieter exhibits are frequently missed by visitors who only view the cathedral.
Best Time to Visit Peter and Paul Fortress #
Summer (June-August) offers the famous white nights and most activity, while late spring and early autumn are less crowded and still pleasant.
