Peter and Paul Fortress

The Peter and Paul Fortress is a historic walled citadel on Zayachy (Hare) Island at the centre of St. Petersburg, founded by Peter the Great in 1703. It is the original core of the city and contains the Peter and Paul Cathedral, the burial place of Russian emperors.

The complex includes the cathedral with its tall gilded spire, museum exhibitions about the fortress and the city, and the remains of prison bastions. The site is used for guided tours, museum displays and seasonal cultural events; the cathedral’s interior and the city views from the walls are principal draws.

Originally built as a defensive fortification and naval base, the fortress later housed a prison for political and high-profile prisoners and evolved into a museum complex in the 20th century. Over time its role shifted from military defence to heritage preservation and tourism.

Situated on an island in the Neva River, the fortress occupies a central position in St. Petersburg’s historic core, adjacent to the riverfront and within easy walking distance of the Hermitage and Palace Square.
