Persepolis
Archaeological Site Ruined ceremonial capital of the Achaemenid Empire
The ceremonial capital of the Achaemenid Empire near Shiraz, with ruined palaces, columned halls and stone reliefs. Visitors walk raised causeways, study royal inscriptions and examine the Gate of All Nations and the Apadana foundations.
Persepolis was the ceremonial capital of the Achaemenid Persian Empire, established under Darius I in the late 6th century BCE. The monumental terraced complex contains palaces, audience halls and richly carved stone reliefs.
Large carved staircases, relief panels depicting subject nations, columned audience halls and the Gate of All Nations are primary highlights. The surviving ruins sit on a raised terrace and visitors walk among foundations, columns and sculpted stone decorations.
Construction was begun under Darius I and continued by his successors including Xerxes and Artaxerxes; the complex functioned as a ceremonial center for festivals and imperial displays. In 330 BCE the site was sacked and set ablaze during Alexander the Greats conquest, after which it fell out of royal use.
Persepolis is located in Fars province in southwest Iran, set in a plain roughly northeast of the modern city of Shiraz. The archaeological site is accessible by road from Shiraz and forms one of Iran’s most important ancient monuments.
- Origin: The site was founded by Achaemenid rulers in the late 6th century BCE and served as a ceremonial capital rather than an administrative city.
- Destruction: Most of the complex was burned and looted during the conquest by Alexander the Great in 330 BCE; what remains are monumental stone foundations and carved reliefs.
- Visitor tip: Best visited with sun at your back for photographs of the low-relief carvings; on-site signage and local guides explain the iconography and layout.
What to See #
- Apadana Palace: A grand audience and columned hall constructed as part of the royal complex and used for imperial ceremonies.
- Gate of All Nations: A monumental gateway with reliefs representing subject peoples and imperial guards that served as an entrance to the terrace complex.
- Tachara (Palace of Darius): The private palace of Darius I, noted for its finely carved stairways and bas-relief panels.
- Throne Hall (Hall of 100 Columns): A vaulted hypostyle hall often called the Hall of Hundred Columns that functioned for large receptions and ceremonies.
How to Get to Persepolis #
Persepolis lies about 60 km northeast of Shiraz. From Shiraz, take Highway 65/Route 87 toward Marvdasht (roughly a 1-1.5 hour drive); local buses run from Shiraz’s central bus station to Marvdasht and a short taxi or shared minibus covers the remaining 10-12 km to the archaeological site. Organized day trips from Shiraz are common and include transfers and entrance arrangements.
Tips for Visiting Persepolis #
- Arrive at first light: the low sun makes the bas-reliefs readable and the terrace cooler; aim for sunrise to avoid tour-bus crowds.
- Combine with Naqsh-e Rustam (c. 12 km west) to see the rock-cut Achaemenid tombs in one morning.
- Hire a licensed guide at the entrance if interested in iconography - the reliefs read like a dossier of empire: satraps, tribute-bearers, and royal beasts.
- Bring sunscreen and water; shade is scarce on the terrace. Photography is excellent but drone use is prohibited.
Best Time to Visit Persepolis #
Best visited in spring or autumn when temperatures are moderate and the carved reliefs are easiest to inspect.
