Pergamon
Archaeological Site Ancient Anatolian city with hilltop ruins and altar
Ancient Pergamon’s hilltop Acropolis in western Turkey reveals a steep theater, the Asklepion sanctuary and Hellenistic terraces; archaeology and views draw day-trippers from nearby towns.
Pergamon (modern Bergama) is an ancient Greek and later Roman city in western Turkey noted for a high-acropolis complex and Hellenistic monuments. It was a major political and cultural centre in the Hellenistic period and retains extensive archaeological remains.
The hilltop acropolis contains temple foundations, a large and steep Hellenistic theatre and terraces that overlook the plain; the theatre seats thousands and remains one of the site’s most visible structures. The lower-slope Asklepion served as a renowned ancient healing sanctuary with medical and religious buildings.
Pergamon rose to prominence under the Attalid dynasty in the 3rd and 2nd centuries BC, when major public works including the monumental altar were constructed; it later became an important Roman provincial city. Excavations in the 19th and 20th centuries removed significant monuments, notably the Pergamon Altar frieze, which is now exhibited in Berlin.
The archaeological site sits above the modern town of Bergama in İzmir Province, western Turkey, on a limestone ridge with views over the surrounding agricultural plain and river valleys.
- Theatre & views: The theatre on the acropolis is unusually steep and can accommodate thousands; it provides expansive views over the surrounding plain and modern Bergama.
- Site proximity: The Asklepion is on a lower slope and is often visited together with the acropolis; both sites are within walking distance in the archaeological zone above Bergama town.
What to See #
- Acropolis and theatre: Acropolis of Pergamon containing the remains of temples, a steep Hellenistic theatre and terraces occupying a fortified hilltop that overlooks the modern town of Bergama.
- Asklepion: Asklepion - an ancient healing sanctuary located on a separate slope below the acropolis, with a complex of buildings used for medical and religious practices in antiquity.
- Pergamon Altar (frieze): Pergamon Altar fragments - the monumental Hellenistic altar frieze originally from the acropolis, excavated in the 19th century and largely exhibited in the Pergamon Museum in Berlin.
How to Get to Pergamon #
Gateway city: The archaeological site of Pergamon (modern Bergama) is reached from İzmir - it’s roughly a 1.5-2 hour drive north of İzmir (about 100-120 km) by the main regional roads. Rental car or taxi from İzmir is common.
Public transport/local: Regular intercity buses run from İzmir’s main bus terminal (otogar) to Bergama; the Pergamon acropolis sits above Bergama town and is a short taxi ride or a walk from the town centre.
Tips for Visiting Pergamon #
- Base yourself in modern Bergama and ascend to the Pergamon acropolis early in the day to avoid heat and coach tours-the steep climb rewards you with sweeping views but is busiest midday.
- Combine your visit with the nearby Asclepion healing sanctuary and the Bergama Archaeological Museum so you see the site in historical context and compare finds from excavations.
- Make time for the acropolis viewpoints over the Red Basilica and the Hellenistic theater-these vantage points convey the scale of the site and tend to be quieter in late afternoon.
