Section of Populated Place Historic coastal town on Bay of Kotor, baroque architecture
A small coastal town on the Bay of Kotor, Perast keeps Baroque palaces and waterfront churches. Tourists take boat trips to Our Lady of the Rocks islet, stroll quayside, and photograph the fjord-like bay and nearby Kotor walls.
Perast is a small coastal town on the Bay of Kotor in Kotor Municipality, Montenegro, notable for its preserved Baroque palaces and its maritime heritage. The town developed most visibly under Venetian influence during the late medieval and early modern periods.
The compact waterfront features a row of Baroque houses and small churches facing the bay and two tiny islets just offshore - Our Lady of the Rocks and Sveti Đorđe. Boats from Perast take a few minutes to reach the islets, and the shoreline promenade offers views across the bay toward the fortified walls and surrounding limestone hills.
Perast grew as a maritime and mercantile community under the influence of the Venetian Republic and local seafaring elites between the 15th and 18th centuries, which is reflected in its palaces and church art. The town later became part of the Austro-Hungarian domains and then Yugoslavia, while its historic core has been preserved rather than industrialized.
The town sits on the western shore of the Bay of Kotor, between the towns of Kotor and Risan, with the bay’s steep karst hills rising immediately behind it. Perast is accessible by road along the coastal route that follows the inner bay.
- Boat access: Short boat rides run from the western waterfront and take 5-10 minutes each way, making the two offshore islets the most practical half-day excursion from town.
- Best time to visit: Best visited between late spring and early autumn when small-boat services are regular and outdoor cafes are open along the waterfront.
What to See #
- Our Lady of the Rocks (Gospa od Škrpjela): A small rocky islet created by deliberate sinking of boats and laying stone, with a Baroque Catholic church built in the 17th century that houses votive paintings and a small maritime museum; boats from Perast land here for short visits.
- Sveti Đorđe (St. George): A natural island with a medieval Benedictine monastery and an old graveyard used by Perast families; it lies immediately offshore and is not normally open to the public.
How to Get to Perast #
Perast is 12-15 km northwest of Kotor. From Kotor take the M2 road along the bay (about 20-25 minutes by car or bus). Regular local boats run from Perast’s harbor to Our Lady of the Rocks; many visitors arrive on organized Bay of Kotor tours.
Tips for Visiting Perast #
- Walk the seafront at dawn for soft light on the baroque facades and near-deserted alleys.
- Take the local boat to Our Lady of the Rocks - the tiny island and its museum are Perast's best spectacle.
- Pay attention to roof tiles and carved door lintels; Venetian masons left signatures and dates on many houses.
