People's Square (Shanghai)

People’s Square is a large public square in central Shanghai that functions as a civic and cultural focal point for the city. It sits at the junction of major streets and is surrounded by government buildings, museums and theatres.

The square is bordered by prominent institutions such as a major municipal museum, the Shanghai Grand Theatre and an urban planning exhibition centre. Public transit connections and pedestrian links make it a common arrival point for visitors exploring downtown Shanghai.

The area occupies what was formerly the Shanghai racecourse; after the racecourse was removed the space was redeveloped into the present square and park, with successive cultural buildings added in the 20th century. The square now serves both ceremonial functions and everyday public use.

Located in Huangpu District, People’s Square is adjacent to Nanjing Road pedestrian shopping street and is within walking distance of the Bund and the city’s major commercial and financial areas.
