A small inhabited island in the Riau Islands province of Indonesia, close to the city of Tanjung Pinang. It is noted for its historical buildings and its role in the local Malay sultanate history.

The island contains a notable mosque and a group of royal tombs and grave sites linked to the former rulers of the Riau-Lingga sultanate, which attract cultural and heritage visits. The settlement area is compact and largely pedestrian, with narrow paths between historic structures.

Penyengat served as an administrative and ceremonial centre in the 18th and 19th centuries for the local sultanate and retained religious and cultural importance through subsequent periods. Many of the island’s notable structures date from that era and reflect Malay-Islamic architectural traditions.

Geographically the island sits off the eastern coast of Bintan Island, immediately to the east of Tanjung Pinang in the Riau Islands; it is a short boat ride from the city harbour and lies within sheltered coastal waters.

  • Access: The island lies a short boat crossing from the city of Tanjung Pinang and is commonly visited on day trips from that port.

What to See #

  • Grand Mosque and complex: A compact mosque complex that is one of the island's most recognisable historic buildings and a focal point for local heritage.
  • Royal tombs: A small cluster of royal tombs and grave markers associated with the rulers of the Riau-Lingga sultanate, located close to the village areas.
