Penelokan

Historical Site Village viewpoint overlooking Mount Batur and caldera

Above Bali’s Lake Batur, Penelokan serves as a viewpoint for Mount Batur and the lake; travellers come for sunrise views, trekking access and roadside warungs.

Penelokan is a hilltop village in the Kintamani District of Bangli Regency on the Indonesian island of Bali, noted for panoramic views over the Mount Batur caldera. It sits on the caldera rim above the volcanic lake and functions as a primary viewpoint for the area.

From roadside lookouts and small terraces visitors can see the crescent-shaped Lake Batur with the active volcano Mount Batur rising within the caldera to around 1,717 meters. The village contains restaurants, small hotels and parking areas that cater to day-trippers and groups preparing for early-morning hikes to the summit; typical climbs from nearby trailheads take about 1.5 to 2 hours.

The landscape around Penelokan is the result of repeated volcanic activity that formed the Batur caldera; the settlement evolved to support agriculture and, more recently, tourism focused on the caldera views. The area is used primarily as a scenic overlook and starting point for guided ascents rather than as a historical site.

Geographically it sits in Bali’s central-northern highlands on the rim of the Batur caldera within Kintamani District, Bangli Regency, overlooking Lake Batur and the volcano complex to the south of the village.

  • Main viewpoint: From the village ridge you can see the Mount Batur caldera and the lake within it, making it a common staging point for sunrise views and nearby summit hikes.
  • Elevation: The village sits on the caldera rim at roughly 1,000 meters above sea level, giving cooler temperatures than Bali's coast and clearer air for vistas.
