Pench National Park in Maharashtra forms part of the Pench Tiger Reserve, a protected landscape centred on dry deciduous forest and grassland that supports tiger and other large mammal populations.

The area was set aside for wildlife protection as part of the larger Pench conservation landscape and has been managed under India’s protected-area framework to maintain habitat for tigers and associated species. Management combines strict protection in core zones with regulated tourism in buffer areas.

The park lies in central India within the state of Maharashtra on the Pench River landscape, forming the southern component of a transboundary forest complex that reaches into neighbouring Madhya Pradesh; access is by road from regional towns and reserve entry points.

  • Conservation and tourism: Part of the broader Pench landscape that straddles state borders, the reserve is managed for tiger conservation and offers vehicle safaris and guided wildlife viewing during the dry season.

What to See #

  • Core forest and wildlife zones: The core conservation area of the Pench Tiger Reserve contains dry deciduous forest, grasslands and waterholes that support tiger, leopard, deer and other large mammal populations.
  • Buffer zones and safari areas: Buffer and buffer-forest areas surrounding the core provide space for tourism activities and regulated safaris conducted under forest department licences.

Tips for Visiting Pench National Park #

  • Plan safaris in the cool months (October-March) and book the first-morning or late-afternoon jeep slots through the forest department or an authorised operator for the best chance of sightings.
  • Use Nagpur as the main transport hub for access and allow time for the drive-Pench has separate Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh ranges, and the Maharashtra zones generally receive fewer visitors than the more famous MP core.
  • If you want quieter wildlife viewing, ask for buffer-zone excursions or birdwatching hides run by local guides rather than the busiest core-area gypsy safaris.
