Pécs is a southern Hungarian cultural city in Baranya County with a compact, walkable center shaped by Roman remains, Ottoman-era architecture, and the Zsolnay ceramics tradition. Much of the classic sightseeing clusters around the Cathedral & Main Square area, anchored by Széchenyi Square, the city’s central square lined with historic buildings.
In the old town, Pécs Cathedral combines medieval and Baroque elements, while the Yakovalı Hasan Paşa Mosque preserves its mihrab and points to Pécs’s Ottoman past. For earlier history, the Early Christian Necropolis of Pécs is an Early Christian burial site with Roman-era mosaics.
Beyond the center, green escapes start close to town in the Mecsek, a low mountain range of forested hills, and on Jakab-hegy, a limestone hill known for medieval ruins and panoramic views. For wetland landscapes, Danube-Drava National Park protects the Danube-Drava wetlands on the Hungarian floodplain.
