Mecsek is a low mountain range in southern Hungary near the city of Pécs, noted for forested ridges, karst geology and regional biodiversity. Its highest point is Zengő at 682 metres.
Hikers and nature visitors use a network of trails that cross wooded slopes and limestone outcrops, with caves and viewpoints scattered through the range. The area supports recreational walking, cycling and seasonal wildlife observation rather than developed tourist infrastructure.
The Mecsek area has a long history of human use including forestry, quarrying and local mining in past centuries, while villages around the range developed connections with the city of Pécs. Conservation and recreational use have increased in the 20th and 21st centuries.
The range lies immediately north of Pécs in southern Hungary and forms a prominent wooded backdrop to the city and surrounding lowlands.

How to Get to Mecsek
The Mecsek hills lie immediately north of the city of Pécs in southern Hungary. The simplest approach is to drive from Pécs on local roads (head toward Tettye/Jakab‑hegy trailheads) - most trailheads are only a short drive from the city and parking is available at popular starting points.
Public transport from Pécs city centre serves several suburbs and trailheads; from those stops marked hiking trails lead into the Mecsek and the main viewpoints are a short walk along signed paths.
Tips for Visiting Mecsek
- Use Pécs as your main access point (Tettye park and the Abaliget/Orfű trailheads are convenient) and plan hikes from there so you can reach popular lookouts before daytrippers arrive.
- Target weekday mornings or late afternoons to avoid weekend crowds and mid‑day heat; quieter trails lead to better views of Jakab‑hegy's rock formations and the higher Zengő ridgeline.
- Include lesser‑used trailheads (for example those from Orfű or small villages) to find solitude and different viewpoints that many visitors miss when they stick to the main paths.
