Main image

A U.S. National Historical Park preserving the archaeological remains of Pecos Pueblo and associated Spanish mission ruins, along with historic landscape and interpretive facilities. The park interprets centuries of Native American and colonial-era occupation.

Primary on-site features include exposed pueblo masonry, plaza spaces, and the remains of a mission church; trails and overlooks give visitors direct views of the archaeological areas while a visitor center provides context and exhibits.

The area was occupied by ancestral Pueblo peoples for many centuries before Spanish contact; the Spanish mission and later historic events altered the site in the colonial period. The park was created to protect and interpret these layered cultural resources.

Located near the village of Pecos in northern New Mexico, the park sits in the Sangre de Cristo foothills east of Santa Fe and is accessed by local roads from Pecos and nearby communities.

  • Site access: Trails around the site provide close views of masonry pueblo remains and the mission walls; wearing sturdy shoes is recommended for uneven surfaces.
