Pearl Cays

Islands Caribbean cays off Nicaragua's Caribbean coast

Off Nicaragua’s South Caribbean Coast, the Pearl Cays are low coral islets visited for sandy beaches, snorkeling over reefs and short boat trips from mainland coastal towns.

The Pearl Cays are a group of small sand and coral islands off Nicaragua’s Caribbean coast in the South Caribbean Coast Autonomous Region. They lie offshore from the mainland Caribbean coast near the coastal communities of Bluefields and surrounding river mouths.

The name reflects historical and local associations with pearl oysters and coastal fisheries, and the cays have long been used by local indigenous and Creole fishing communities. Ownership and use of individual cays vary, with some used seasonally for fishing and others occupied or privately controlled.

The cays sit off Nicaragua’s southeastern Caribbean coast in the South Caribbean Coast Autonomous Region, seaward of the coastal lagoons and river mouths near Bluefields and within short boat distance of the mainland.

  • Getting there: Most access is by small boat from coastal towns on the South Caribbean Coast; there are no regular car or ferry links.
  • Conditions: The cays are low, sandy and coral-based, so low tides and weather strongly affect landing and snorkeling conditions.
