How to Get to Pate Island #
Pate Island (Lamu County) is reached by boat. Regular local dhows and motorboats connect Pate with Lamu Town (on Lamu Island) and with the mainland port of Mokowe; crossings are short and depend on the exact landing point. From Lamu Town you catch a boat at the Lamu jetty, and if you are coming from the Kenyan mainland you can travel to Mokowe (ferry/boat links connect Mokowe and Lamu) then transfer onward by small boat to Pate.
If arriving from further afield, there are scheduled domestic flights to Lamu (Lamu Airport) from Nairobi and other Kenyan centres, after which a short boat transfer will reach Pate.
Tips for Visiting Pate Island #
- Arrange your transport with local dhow operators from Lamu Town or Mokowe in advance and check tide schedules - boat availability and timing are strongly influenced by tides and the monsoon season.
- Visit during the dry months (roughly November-March) when sea conditions are generally calmer for small-boat transfers and walking between villages is easier.
- Hire a local guide to explore mangrove channels and Pate Town's historic sites; guides can navigate local landing spots and will point out lesser-known ruins and Swahili architecture that many visitors miss.
