Passeig de Lluís Companys is a tree-lined promenade in Barcelona that links the Arc de Triomf at its northern end with Parc de la Ciutadella at the southern end. It is named for Catalan president Lluís Companys and functions as a formal pedestrian axis near the city center.

The promenade is flanked by palms and public seating and is used for strolling, cycling and public gatherings; it provides a clear sightline from the Arc de Triomf into the park. The northern terminus features the red-brick Arc de Triomf, built for the 1888 Universal Exposition, while the southern terminus opens into green space and civic attractions.

The avenue developed as part of Barcelona’s late 19th-century urban works associated with the Universal Exposition and has since been maintained as a civic promenade and event route. It sits on the boundary between the Ciutat Vella and Eixample districts and serves as a pedestrian link to nearby neighborhoods such as El Born.

The promenade runs through central Barcelona, immediately adjacent to the El Born and La Ribera neighborhoods and a short walk from the city’s main transport routes and tourist areas.

• Best viewpoints: Good vantage points include the steps near the Arc de Triomf for views of the full length of the promenade and the Cascada fountain inside the park for photographic detail.
• Crowds and timing: The avenue is frequently used for pedestrian promenades, cycling and public events, and is busiest on weekends and during city festivals.

What to See#

• Arc de Triomf: Completed for the 1888 Universal Exposition, this red-brick triumphal arch was designed by Josep Vilaseca i Casanovas and marks the northern end of the promenade.
• Parc de la Ciutadella: A major public green space at the southern end of the promenade that contains the Cascada fountain and Barcelona Zoo, serving as the main recreational terminus of the boulevard.

Take Barcelona metro L1 (the red line) to the Arc de Triomf stop - the station exit opens onto Passeig de Lluís Companys next to the Arc de Triomf monument. The promenade is also directly adjacent to Parc de la Ciutadella; it’s an easy 15-20 minute walk east from Plaça Catalunya or a short walk from many central bus and train stops (Arc de Triomf Rodalies/commuter rail).

• Enter from the Arc de Triomf end (Arc de Triomf metro/tram stop) and walk the tree‑lined promenade toward Parc de la Ciutadella for the classic view and easy connections to the park.
• Go early morning or late afternoon to avoid peak tourist flows along the promenade; midday is busiest because it connects major attractions.
• Don't just pass through-look for the wrought‑iron lampposts, sculptures and side alleys off the promenade, and continue into Parc de la Ciutadella to find quieter spots that most visitors miss.
