Besòs (river) Stream

The Besòs is a short river in Catalonia that drains a portion of the Barcelona metropolitan area and discharges into the Mediterranean Sea near the boundary between Barcelona and Badalona. It is a small but locally important watercourse for the urban area it traverses.

The river corridor has undergone significant environmental and urban renewal since the late 20th century, with flood-control works and the creation of riverside parks and trails that are used for cycling and walking. The river passes through urban and industrial zones before reaching its estuary area close to Barcelona’s northeastern suburbs.

Historically the Besòs suffered from industrial pollution and periodic flooding; remediation and river-park projects since the 1990s have improved water quality and public access along much of the lower course.

The mouth lies within the Barcelona metropolitan area, a short distance northeast of Barcelona city centre and adjacent to coastal suburbs such as Sant Adrià de Besòs and Badalona.

• Recreation: Riverside improvements include the Parc Fluvial del Besòs, a public river-park used for cycling, walking and riverside recreation.

The mouth and lower course of the Besòs River are easily reached from Barcelona. Take Barcelona Metro L4 to El Maresme | Fòrum station (or Rodalies R1 to Sant Adrià de Besòs) and walk a few minutes to the river/sea-front at the Parc del Fòrum and Sant Adrià area. By car the site is a short drive east from central Barcelona along the C-31/coastal routes (roughly 5-8 km depending on your start point).

• Use the Parc Fluvial del Besòs riverside paths to explore the river corridor by bike or on foot-access is straightforward from Besòs Mar (L4) or La Pau (L2/L4) metro stations and these entry points avoid the industrial stretches.
• Head to the river mouth at Sant Adrià de Besòs for the coastal wetlands and birdlife; that delta area and the adjacent green spaces are often overlooked by visitors who stay within Barcelona proper.
• Plan visits for early morning or late afternoon on weekdays to dodge local recreational crowds that gather at the riverside on weekends.
