Paoay Church
Religious Site Baroque-era church famous for massive buttresses
Paoay’s San Agustín Church, an example of Earthquake Baroque, features massive buttresses and 17th‑century construction; travelers come to study its architecture and colonial‑era interiors.
Paoay Church, officially the Church of Saint Augustine in Paoay, Ilocos Norte, Philippines, is a late 17th- to early 18th-century Spanish colonial church. It is famous for its massive buttresses and Baroque architecture adapted to local seismic conditions.
A large coral-limestone church with a distinctive series of massive earth buttresses along the sides and rear, and a separate, freestanding bell tower. The church compound includes stonework details and interior altars reflecting colonial-era craftsmanship.
Construction began in the late 17th century and was completed in the early 18th century by Augustinian builders; the design and heavy buttressing reflect measures taken to resist earthquakes. The church was later recognized on the UNESCO World Heritage List as part of the Baroque Churches of the Philippines.
Located in the town of Paoay in Ilocos Norte province on the northwest coast of Luzon, the church stands a short drive inland from the provincial city of Laoag.
- UNESCO inscription: Inscribed as one of the Baroque Churches of the Philippines on the UNESCO World Heritage List for its unique seismic-adaptive architecture.
What to See #
- Separate bell tower: A separate bell tower stands apart from the main church building and is a notable feature of the church complex, often photographed from the plaza.

Tips for Visiting Paoay Church #
- Visit early in the morning or late afternoon to avoid mid-day heat and peak tour groups-these times also give softer light for photos of the façade and buttresses.
- Approach from the plaza on the church's front (main entrance) and then walk around the sides to appreciate the massive earthquake-baroque buttresses; the detached bell tower across the square is worth a separate photo stop.
- Ask locally about the small on-site displays or any guided visits; a short guided explanation highlights construction features and the church's role in local history that many self-guided visitors miss.
