Pannonhalma Archabbey

Pannonhalma Archabbey is a Benedictine monastery in northwestern Hungary founded in 996 AD and recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It remains an active religious community and a major historical and cultural centre in the region.

The abbey was established in 996 under royal patronage and developed across the Middle Ages into a major religious and cultural institution; it underwent architectural additions and restorations in Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque periods. It has preserved a continuous Benedictine presence and accumulated a significant library and archival collection over the centuries.

Perched on a hill near the town of Pannonhalma in Győr-Moson-Sopron County, the archabbey overlooks agricultural plains roughly 100 kilometres west of Budapest and is reachable by regional road connections.
