About Vértes Hills

The Vértes Hills are a low, forested hill range in northwestern Hungary, forming part of the Transdanubian Mountains. The area is characterised by rolling ridges, mixed broadleaf woodland and small rural settlements and is used for forestry, grazing and outdoor recreation.

Recreational highlights include marked hiking and cycling routes, scattered lookout points and small historical remnants such as chapel sites and village ruins. The landscape is primarily rural and offers accessible low-elevation walking rather than alpine mountaineering.

Historically the hills have supported local agriculture, forestry and mining in places, with human settlement in the valleys and on lower slopes for many centuries. Modern management balances timber production with conservation and outdoor recreation.

The range lies in Transdanubia in northwestern Hungary, forming a modest natural boundary within the interior of the country and interspersed with farmed valleys and small towns.
