Pandroseion
Archaeological Site Ancient Athenian sanctuary on the Acropolis
A minor sanctuary on the Athenian Acropolis, the Pandroseion sits beside the Erechtheion. Visitors encounter its ruins while touring the Acropolis and the Acropolis Museum as part of classical Athens’ archaeological circuit.
The Pandroseion is a small sanctuary on the Acropolis of Athens dedicated to Pandrosus, a mythical daughter of the autochthonous king Cecrops. It occupies a compact precinct immediately north of the Erechtheion.
On-site features historically included altars and a hearth tied to local cult practice and the legend of the sacred olive. The Pandroseion functioned as part of the religious and civic ensemble of the classical Acropolis rather than as a large freestanding temple.
Its remains today are visible as foundation lines and fragments within the Acropolis archaeological complex and are interpreted in relation to the neighbouring Erechtheion and the cult of Athena.
The Pandroseion sits on the Acropolis plateau in central Athens, in the Attica region of Greece, overlooking the city from the citadel’s northern side.
- Acropolis precinct: Located on the north slope of the Acropolis, the site sits immediately adjacent to the Erechtheion and marks the traditional location of the sacred olive associated with Athena's cult.
