About Athena Promachos

The Athena Promachos was a monumental bronze statue of Athena that once stood on the Acropolis of Athens in the mid-5th century BC, attributed in ancient sources to the sculptor Phidias. It functioned as a towering civic emblem and was described in antiquity as visible to ships at sea.

Accounts place the statue between the Propylaea and the Parthenon on the Acropolis; ancient descriptions and contemporary coin images indicate a colossal bronze figure armed and striding. The original statue does not survive and is known only through literary sources, coins and later artistic reproductions.

The Athena Promachos occupied a prominent position on the Acropolis ridge in central Athens, forming part of the classical ensemble of temples and monumental sculpture on the hill.

How to Get to Athena Promachos

The Athena Promachos was on the Acropolis in Athens; to see the Acropolis complex, take the Athens Metro to Acropoli station (short walk) or walk up from Plaka/Syntagma (about 10-15 minutes uphill via Dionysiou Areopagitou). The main pedestrian approaches involve an uphill walk from the metro or from the historic centre.
