Palm Jumeirah
Island Artificial Dubai island shaped like a palm tree
Palm Jumeirah is Dubai’s palm-shaped artificial island featuring resort hotels, beachfront residences, a monorail and high-end dining; travelers seek luxury resorts, private beaches and views of the Dubai Marina skyline.
Palm Jumeirah is an artificial island off the coast of Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, built in a stylized palm-tree shape by the developer Nakheel. Construction began in the early 2000s and it is one of Dubai’s most visible land-reclamation projects.
A mixed residential and tourist area, the island contains hotels, private villas, restaurants, marinas and leisure facilities concentrated along the trunk and the crescent breakwater. Notable features include large resort hotels and an elevated monorail that links the island to the mainland; promenades and boardwalks provide public views of the Dubai skyline.
The project was developed by Nakheel through land reclamation and urban construction in the 2000s to expand Dubai’s coastline and tourism capacity. Over time it has become a high-profile residential and resort district and a recognisable symbol of Dubai’s coastal development.
The island sits off Dubai’s Jumeirah shoreline in the Emirate of Dubai, directly west of the Palm Jumeirah coastline and connected to the mainland by a road causeway and the monorail.
- Photography tip: Best light for photos is around sunrise or sunset when the low sun highlights the island's palm shape against the Dubai skyline.
- Access: Public access is concentrated on the trunk and boardwalks; many hotels and villas are private so plan visits around public promenades and restaurants.
What to See #
- Atlantis The Palm: A large resort hotel and landmark complex occupying the outer end of the trunk, known for its marina, aquarium and a sizable waterpark.
- The Crescent: A crescent-shaped breakwater running parallel to the trunk that protects the inner palm and contains a line of hotels and marinas along its seaward edge.
- Palm Jumeirah Monorail: A driverless elevated transit line linking the island's trunk to the Dubai mainland, providing regular public transport service for residents and visitors.
How to Get to Palm Jumeirah #
Palm Jumeirah is reached by car via Sheikh Zayed Road (E11) with the Palm/Al Sufouh exits, and by taxi from Dubai Marina or central Dubai. The Palm Jumeirah Monorail runs along the trunk of the island (terminus at Atlantis) and provides a convenient way to reach the Shoreline and Atlantis areas; monorail and taxi stops are a short walk from hotels and attractions.
Tips for Visiting Palm Jumeirah #
- Visit Palm Jumeirah around sunrise or late afternoon to get the best light for pictures of the fronds and the Atlantis crescent while avoiding the midday heat and peak beach crowds, especially on Fridays.
- Use the Palm Monorail to access the Atlantis and Crescent side quickly and to avoid heavy car traffic on the trunk; if you want quieter beachfronts, head to the eastern fronds early in the morning when many visitors are still at hotels.
Best Time to Visit Palm Jumeirah #
