Paley Park
Park Intimate Midtown pocket park with cascading waterfall
Small Midtown Manhattan oasis with a prominent waterfall wall, planting beds and benches; Paley Park provides a brief urban respite amid office towers.
Paley Park is a small, privately created pocket park on Midtown Manhattan’s East Side that opened in the late 1960s. It is widely cited as a model of compact urban public space design.
A narrow, sheltered lawn and seating area framed by high walls and trees, with a prominent 20-foot waterfall at the back that masks city noise and creates a cool microclimate. The park seats a modest number of visitors on movable chairs and stone ledges and is popular for lunchtime breaks and quiet respite amid busy streets.
The park was funded by William S. Paley and designed by landscape architect Robert Zion; it opened in the late 1960s as an example of mid-20th century urban design for small private-public spaces. Its format influenced later pocket parks and plaza designs in dense city centres.
Paley Park sits in Midtown Manhattan on East 53rd Street in the vicinity of Fifth and Madison Avenues, within walking distance of major commercial and office districts.
- Waterfall height: Contains a raised 20-foot waterfall at the rear wall that provides ambient sound and cooling in summer.
- Best time to visit: Designed as a model urban pocket park in Midtown Manhattan and commonly busiest at weekday lunch hours.
