The complex includes state rooms and courtyards that reflect its role as a seat of princely government and ceremonial life over several centuries. Today parts of the palace are presented to the public with exhibitions on the political and cultural history of the Grand Duchy.
The palace developed and changed across the medieval and early modern periods as rulers rebuilt and adapted its spaces for administrative and representational functions. It later lost some original structures but has been subject to archaeological study and conservation efforts.
The site sits on Cathedral Square in Vilnius Old Town, immediately next to the cathedral and within the compact historic centre.
