Northern Mountains (Gilgit-Baltistan, Skardu, Hunza, Karakoram and western Himalaya)

Late winter still holds cold spells, but days lengthen and hill stations such as Naltar and the lower Hunza valleys begin to show bright sun between snowfalls. Spring snowmelt is minimal at low elevations, while higher passes remain impassable; roads can be icy around Skardu and the Baltoro approach so travel plans often depend on local taxi drivers and army convoy openings. Pack warm layers and be prepared for short notice changes.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa & the northern valleys (Peshawar, Swat, Chitral, Kaghan, Naran)

Late winter brings those first sharp, sunny days into the lower valleys while the highlands remain snowbound: Swat’s towns gradually clear and tractors and 4x4s begin to reopen local routes. Chitral stays colder longer; the Kalash valleys retain deep snowpack in shady hollows. For visitors who enjoy winter sports, Malam Jabba and Naltar present their best early skiing conditions, though services are limited.

Punjab & Pothohar Plateau (Lahore, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Multan region)

Late winter sees fog break more frequently and Islamabad’s Margalla Hills show fresh green after winter rain; day temperatures feel brisk but pleasant for walking the old bazaars of Rawalpindi. Occasional western disturbances bring rain to the Pothohar and light snow to the highest spots around Murree, making hill stations attractive weekend escapes. Dress in layers and expect cooler nights than in the plains.

Sindh & Lower Indus Plain (Karachi metropolitan region, Hyderabad, Thatta, Sukkur, Thar Desert fringe)

Late winter brings comfortable sunny days and warm afternoons across the lower Indus: Hyderabad and Karachi move into their most agreeable stretch, with the sea tempering extremes. Migratory waterfowl arrive in the Indus Delta and birding near Thatta is excellent. For travelers this is prime season to combine city exploring with short coastal getaways; pack a windproof layer for evenings by the sea.

Southern Coast & Karachi metropolitan area (Karachi, coastal Makran approaches, Thatta shoreline)

Late winter continues mild with sun and calm seas - ideal for boat excursions to the Arabian Sea or short cruises in the harbour. Karachi’s outdoor cafés and food markets are lively as people enjoy the temperate weather, and this is a good month for visiting Churna Island for snorkeling if conditions are calm. Pack a windproof layer for early mornings and stay hydrated.

Balochistan Plateau & Makran Coast (Quetta, Gwadar, Turbat, Pasni, coastal highway)

Late winter in inland Balochistan means gradually warming days while nights remain cold; quetta’s high altitude gives sharp temperature swings between sunny afternoons and freezing nights. The coastal Makran corridor near Gwadar and Turbat enjoys more temperate conditions and is pleasant for road travel and wildlife watching. Mountain roads can still be icy - pack warm layers and plan buffer time.
