Paektu-san (also called Baekdu Mountain) is a volcanic stratovolcano on the border between northeastern China (Jilin province) and North Korea, with a summit elevation of about 2,744 metres. The summit area contains a prominent crater lake commonly known as Heaven Lake, which occupies the volcano’s caldera.
The mountain is an important cultural and historical symbol for Koreans on both sides of the border and features prominently in local myth and national narratives. The summit area and caldera attract visitors for their dramatic scenery and the lake formed by past volcanic activity.
Paektu-san occupies a high volcanic massif at the intersection of the Korean Peninsula and northeastern China. The mountain’s flanks are forested at lower elevations and give way to alpine terrain around the crater.

How to Get to Paektu-san #
On the Chinese side, the usual approach is from Changbai County (Jilin Province) with road access to the Changbai Mountain Scenic Area and cable car service to higher elevations. Access on the DPRK side is controlled through official tours originating in Pyongyang; independent travel is not possible.
Tips for Visiting Paektu-san #
- Access from the Chinese or North Korean side requires careful planning and local permits; Changbai/Paektu is managed under strict controls in both countries.
- Check seasonal access restrictions - heavy snow and ice can make the rim and paths dangerous in winter.
- On the Chinese side, the North Slope (Beishan) has developed tourist infrastructure with cable cars and walkways; bring higher-layer clothing for the crater rim.

Summer and early autumn are the most practical times to visit; winter is harsh and often inaccessible.
