Remains include sections of city walls, fortress works and nearby tumulus tombs that document urban planning and elite burial practices used by Goguryeo from the early first millennium AD. The site is one element of a series of capitals and tomb clusters that together illustrate the political and cultural landscape of the kingdom.
Historical records and archaeological evidence identify the site as a major political centre for Goguryeo during the first millennium AD; the city served administrative and defensive functions and was associated with royal activity. Over time the urban centre evolved and was abandoned as political power shifted within the region.
Gungnae lies on the borderlands of northeast China, in Ji’an city along the Yalu/Amnok river corridor in Jilin province. The site sits in a river valley landscape and is accessible from regional transport hubs in Jilin.
