Padar, Indonesia

Padar is a small, rugged island in Komodo National Park, East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia, noted for its steep ridges and panoramic viewpoints. It forms part of the park archipelago between Komodo and Rinca islands.

A short but steep trail leads to a central ridge viewpoint that overlooks at least three distinct bays and sheltered beaches; the climb typically takes 20 to 40 minutes depending on fitness and conditions. From the ridge visitors get 360 degree views of turquoise water, neighbouring islands and the island’s curved sandy coves that are visible from the summit.

Padar has no major permanent settlements and has been used mainly for occasional grazing and by visitors to Komodo National Park; it is part of the protected marine and terrestrial zones of the park. Tourism developed after the park gained wider international attention for its marine biodiversity and Komodo dragon populations on nearby islands.

The island sits in Komodo National Park in the Flores Sea, north of Flores island and between the better-known islands of Komodo and Rinca; access is by boat from Labuan Bajo on Flores.
