Pacaya is an active volcano in southern Guatemala known for frequent volcanic activity and accessible lava fields. The volcano is one of the country’s most-visited active volcanoes because of relatively short hikes to viewing areas and visible recent lava flows.

Trails lead up to viewpoints on the upper slopes where visitors can observe fumarolic activity, lava-cooling fields and fresh deposits. Guided walks often include routes that end at safe observation points; on occasions of higher activity access is restricted for safety.

Pacaya has been active during the modern period with repeated eruptions that changed its summit and produced flows down the flanks. The volcano has been used for scientific monitoring and is a managed recreational destination when conditions permit.

Pacaya sits in the Escuintla/Guatemala highland area south of the central highlands, within easy driving distance from Antigua and Guatemala City; the landscape is volcanic with relatively open slopes leading up to the summit area.

  • Hiking and tours: Summit hikes are commonly done with guides and often take 1.5 to 3 hours from the main trailhead depending on route and pace; night hikes are popular to view incandescent lava when activity allows.

What to See #

  • Summit cone: The active summit cone and vent area where recent eruptions produce lava flows and ash emissions; visible from nearby trails and a focal point for guided hikes.
  • Lava fields and hiking routes: Extensive recent lava fields and hardened flows near the upper slopes that visitors often walk on with guides to observe cooling lava and volcanic features.
