How to Get to Paarl
Paarl is easiest reached from Cape Town International Airport (CPT) by car, coach or regional rail to Paarl Station. The drive takes around an hour; intercity coaches and Metrorail provide lower-cost alternatives but check timetables and reliability before travel.
Cape Town International Airport (CPT): Cape Town International is the nearest major airport for Paarl (about 60-70 km by road). Driving or a private transfer takes roughly 50-80 minutes depending on traffic; expect private-transfer fares from about ZAR 700-1,200 and car-rental daily rates from roughly ZAR 300-700 (prices vary by season).
George / Worcester: There are no regular commercial flights into Paarl itself; the closest other commercial airport is George (for southern Garden Route access) and Worcester has no scheduled commercial service. For most visitors Cape Town International is the practical arrival point to reach Paarl.
Train: Paarl is served by Metrorail Western Cape (Northern Line) at Paarl Station; services run via Bellville to Cape Town. Journey times from Cape Town/Bellville are typically around 60-90 minutes depending on connection; Metrorail fares are low (single fares generally in the low tens of rand). Services can be slow and sometimes unreliable, so check schedules and avoid late-night travel.
Bus: Intercity coach operators (Intercape and other regional coaches) run regular services between Cape Town and Paarl from the Cape Town coach terminals; journey time is about 60-80 minutes by coach. Local minibus taxis also operate frequently between Paarl, Wellington and surrounding towns - short trips commonly cost a few rand to a few dozen rand depending on distance.
How to Get Around Paarl
Paarl is easiest to get around by car - rental or private transfer gives the most flexibility for wineries and rural spots. For budget travel, use intercity coaches and Metrorail where practical, and depend on minibus taxis for short local hops; within town, walking and cycling work well for short distances.
- Car (rental / self-drive) (ZAR 300-700/day) - Driving is the most flexible way to explore Paarl and the Winelands - roads are good and parking in town is generally straightforward. Rental cars are available at Cape Town International and in Paarl; expect daily rates roughly ZAR 300-700 depending on vehicle and season. Driving lets you reach vineyards and outlying attractions on your own timetable and is my recommended option if you plan to visit multiple wine estates.
- Uber / Metered taxi (ZAR 30-800) - Ride-hailing (Uber) and local metered taxis operate around Paarl for short trips and airport transfers; they are convenient for door-to-door travel without parking hassles. Airport transfers by Uber or private taxi from Cape Town will be considerably more expensive than coaches (often ZAR 700+); within Paarl expect short rides in the tens to low hundreds of rand depending on distance.
- Metrorail (train) (ZAR 10-40) - Metrorail Western Cape's Northern Line serves Paarl Station with services to Bellville and onward to Cape Town. Trains are cheap (single fares typically in the low tens of rand) but can be slow and prone to delays; useful for budget travellers who plan around published times. Avoid travelling by Metrorail late at night and keep belongings secure.
- Intercity coach & regional buses (ZAR 60-200) - Operators such as Intercape and other regional coaches run between Cape Town and Paarl from Cape Town coach terminals; coaches are comfortable, affordable and drop you close to Paarl town centre. Journey time is about 60-80 minutes; fares vary but are commonly a moderate bargain compared with a taxi. Coaches are a reliable option for day trips to and from Cape Town.
- Minibus taxi (ZAR 5-30) - Minibus taxis are the backbone of local and regional public transport, connecting Paarl with nearby towns (Wellington, Stellenbosch, Cape Town suburbs). They're cheap (single short trips usually cost a few rand to a few dozen rand) and frequent but can be crowded and operate without schedules - ask locally for routes and departure points. Good for short hops if you're comfortable with a more local, informal experience.
- Bicycle (ZAR 50-200/day) - Paarl is reasonably cycle-friendly around the town and wine estates; many guesthouses and some rental shops offer bikes by the day. Cycling is a pleasant way to visit nearby vineyards on quieter roads, but watch for agricultural traffic on rural routes and be cautious on busier roads.
- Walking - Paarl's town centre and nearby attractions (Paarl Rock, many wine estates) are very walkable for short visits and exploration. Walking is the best way to soak up the town's architecture and markets, but for longer distances between estates or neighbouring towns you'll want a car or taxi.
