Outeniqua Mountains
Mountains Mountain range in Western Cape with scenic passes
The Outeniqua Mountains rise near George along the Garden Route, offering forested hikes, the Outeniqua Pass road, mountain-biking trails and views down to coastal plains and lagoon systems.
The Outeniqua Mountains are a west-east trending range on South Africa’s southern coast in the Western Cape that form the southern rim of the Little Karoo. The range separates the Indian Ocean coast around George from the semi-arid inland and includes high ridgelines used for recreation and transport.
The range forms a prominent scenic barrier along the Garden Route with steep slopes and forested valleys; roads and trails provide viewpoints over coastal plains and the Little Karoo. The Outeniqua Pass is the main road crossing that links the coastal town of George with Oudtshoorn, and the high ridges are used for hiking and mountain biking.
The mountains are part of the Cape Fold Belt and have long formed a natural divide between coastal and inland regions, influencing settlement and transport corridors. Over time the pass and roads were developed to improve communications between coastal ports and inland agricultural areas.
The range lies immediately south of the town of George on the Garden Route and forms the southern boundary of the Little Karoo in the Western Cape. The mountains run roughly east-west along the southern coast of South Africa.
- Main transport route: The pass is the main overland route between the Garden Route coast and the Little Karoo and is typically used year-round for road travel.
- Best viewing times: Best light for photography is early morning or late afternoon when coastal mist and mountain shadows enhance ridgelines.
