Garden Route District Municipality is the district-level authority covering the coastal Garden Route corridor in South Africa’s Western Cape province. The district administers a series of coastal towns, inland karoo areas and conservation landscapes.

The region contains a string of well-known towns and natural features including beaches, lagoons, indigenous forests and protected coastal reserves. Popular activities in the district include beach tourism, forest walks, lagoon boating and wildlife viewing.

The municipal structure reflects administrative arrangements for the Garden Route region established in the post-apartheid era to manage local services and regional planning; the area has long been a tourism and agricultural zone dating back to colonial settlement.

The district sits along the southern coast of the Western Cape, covering towns and countryside roughly between Mossel Bay in the west and coastal settlements eastwards toward the border with the Eastern Cape.

• Coastal towns: Mossel Bay and Plettenberg Bay - coastal towns along the Garden Route known for beaches, marine activities and tourist facilities.

The Garden Route is most commonly reached by road along the N2 from Cape Town (about 430 km to George) or from Port Elizabeth/ Gqeberha to the east. George Airport (GRJ) is the region’s main commercial airport with connections to Cape Town and Johannesburg. Once on the N2, towns are strung along the route and well signed; local minibuses and intercity buses connect the main towns, while car hire is the most flexible way to explore.

• Drive the N2 rather than trying to shortcut along rural roads; distances look short on a map and are not always fast.
• Use George as a logistical hub - it has the region's main airport (George Airport) and grocery options.
• Time coastal hikes for low tide on stretches like Robberg Peninsula to avoid slippery rocks and to see strandveld plants at their most vivid.
• Book whale- and shark-watching boats from Hermanus or Mossel Bay in advance during peak season (June-September).
