Otrar

Otrar is the archaeological remains of a Silk Road city in southern Kazakhstan’s Turkistan Region that was a major trade and administrative centre in the medieval period.

The site preserves remnants of a fortified citadel, city walls and urban quarters that reflect its role as a commercial hub on routes between Central Asia and the steppe. Ruins include defensive works and excavated building foundations that are open to study and limited visitor access.

Otrar gained particular historical prominence in the early 13th century when conflict arising from the treatment of a Mongol trade caravan led to a punitive siege and the city’s destruction by Genghis Khan’s forces in 1219-1220. Subsequent centuries saw periodic reoccupation and archaeological investigation.

The site lies in Turkistan Region in southern Kazakhstan on the steppe corridor of Central Asia; it is accessible from regional centres and sits within an agricultural and semi-arid landscape.
