Osu Castle
Castle Colonial-era fortress and historical government building in Accra
Osu Castle (Fort Christiansborg) sits on Accra’s Gulf of Guinea waterfront; a colonial-era fort where visitors study colonial history, view the harbour and photograph battered ramparts and coastal streets.
Osu Castle, also known as Christiansborg, is a coastal fortification in the Osu district of Accra, Ghana, originally constructed in the 17th century and long associated with European trading forts on the Gold Coast. It has been one of the principal colonial-era fortresses in Accra and played a central role in regional administration.
The complex contains fortifications, administrative buildings and a waterfront promenade shaped by successive repairs and reconstructions; its fabric reflects use as a trading post and later as a seat of colonial and national administration. The site retains visible elements typical of West African European forts, including ramparts and internal courtyards.
Built by European traders in the 17th century, the castle passed between Danish, British and local hands as control of the Gold Coast shifted; over time it served commercial, military and governmental uses. In the 20th century it continued to be used by colonial authorities and later by Ghanaian governments as administrative offices and official premises.
Osu Castle sits on a small headland at the edge of Accra, overlooking the Gulf of Guinea and close to the city’s central districts. It is within the Greater Accra Region, in the urban fabric of Accra rather than in a rural setting.
- Setting: Located on a headland at the shore of Accra, the castle occupies a prominent position facing the Gulf of Guinea and the city's waterfront.
- Access: Access and interior tours are limited and the complex has served administrative functions for much of its modern history, so public entry can be restricted at times.
