Black Star Square (also called Independence Square) is a large public plaza in central Accra, Greater Accra Region, Ghana, commissioned in the early 1960s as a national ceremonial space.
The site contains a broad parade ground and several monumental features including the Black Star Gate and an Independence Arch; it is used for military parades, state funerals and national celebrations and is designed for large public gatherings.
The square was commissioned by Ghana’s first president, Kwame Nkrumah, after independence and has since been the primary venue for national ceremonies and official commemorations.
The plaza sits in the ceremonial and government district of central Accra and is commonly visited from central city districts and nearby government buildings.
