Main image

Osmussaar is a small island in the Gulf of Finland off Estonia’s northwest coast, administered within Lääne County and valued for its natural habitats and birdlife.

The island features coastal cliffs, rocky shores and a relatively sparse human footprint, with important nesting seabird colonies and notable spring migration activity. Visitors encounter a mix of maritime vegetation, shorelines and traces of past human occupation.

During the 20th century Osmussaar hosted military installations and saw events related to wartime operations; remnants of bunkers and foundations remain alongside natural recovery. The island is protected for conservation and managed to preserve its habitats.

Osmussaar lies off Estonia’s northwest mainland in the Gulf of Finland and is reached by small boat from nearby coastal towns; it is a short-distance island but remote in terms of services.

  • Birdlife and nature reserve: Designated nature reserve with important seabird colonies and spring migration concentrations, making it attractive for birdwatchers in April and May.
  • Access and seasonality: Uninhabited or very sparsely inhabited outside of summer months; visits are often by small private boats or organised trips from Estonian coastal towns.

What to See #

  • Lighthouse and coast structures: A small lighthouse and navigational structures mark parts of the island's coastline and are among the most visible built features for visitors.
  • Military remains: Remains of 20th-century military fortifications and buildings are scattered across the island and can be seen alongside natural habitats.
