Oslo Opera House
Theater Contemporary waterfront opera house with sloped roof
The Oslo Opera House sits on the city’s waterfront, designed with a walkable roof and galleries; visitors attend opera and ballet performances or climb the sloping exterior for views of the harbour.
The Oslo Opera House is the home of the Norwegian National Opera and Ballet, located on the Bjørvika waterfront in central Oslo. Opened in 2008 and designed by the firm Snøhetta, the building is notable for its angled, walkable roof and white exterior cladding.
Public circulation areas and terraces lead up to the low, sloping roof that interconnects exterior promenade and waterfront viewpoints. Inside, the building contains the main auditorium and rehearsal and production facilities for opera and ballet performances.
The project was conceived as a civic cultural building and has become a prominent piece of contemporary architecture in Oslo’s redevelopment of the port area. Its rooftop and plaza are used year-round by residents and visitors for views of the fjord and city.
The opera house sits at the head of the Oslofjord in the Bjørvika district, within walking distance of downtown Oslo and adjacent to the city’s main port and transport links.
