Ortaköy Mosque sits on the Bosphorus waterfront beneath the Bosphorus Bridge; visitors photograph its neo‑Baroque façade, stroll the square for kumpir and tea, and watch ferries pass.
Ortaköy Mosque (Büyük Mecidiye Camii) is a 19th-century riverside mosque on the European shore of the Bosphorus in the Ortaköy neighbourhood of Istanbul. The building is executed in a Neo-Baroque style and is notable for its decorative stonework and waterfront setting.
The mosque’s compact plan includes a central domed prayer hall and finely worked stone façades that face the strait; it has become an iconic photographic subject because of its position directly on the water and its silhouette against the Bosphorus Bridge. The site functions as an active house of worship and as a public landmark in a busy riverfront district.
Constructed during the reign of Sultan Abdülmecid I in the mid-19th century by architects of the Balyan family, the mosque stands in the Ortaköy quarter, close to ferry piers and the bridge connecting the European and Asian sides of Istanbul.
- Architectural origin: Constructed in the mid-19th century for Sultan Abdülmecid I in a Neo-Baroque style by members of the Balyan family of imperial architects.
- Best viewing: Perched on the Bosphorus waterfront beneath the Bosphorus Bridge, it offers particularly striking views at sunrise and sunset when light illuminates the façade and waterway.

Take the tram (T1) to Kabataş, then a short tram or bus ride or a 10-15 minute walk along the waterfront to Ortaköy. Many ferries stop at nearby piers running along the Bosphorus; taxis from Taksim take about 10-15 minutes depending on traffic.
