The Oregon Zoo is a major zoological park located in Washington Park in Portland, Oregon, United States, with roots dating back to 1888 and a relocation to its current site in 1959. It is one of the largest cultural attractions in the Portland region and focuses on conservation, education and public exhibits.

Exhibit highlights include large mixed-species habitats such as an African Savanna with giraffes and other hoofstock, a purpose-built elephant habitat known as Elephant Lands, and galleries focused on native Northwest wildlife. The zoo houses over 2,000 animals representing more than 200 species and offers daily keeper talks, educational programs and seasonal events.

The institution developed from a city menagerie in the late 19th century into a modern zoo emphasizing species management and conservation programs. Over the 20th and 21st centuries it has expanded exhibits, improved animal care facilities and participated in regional and international breeding and conservation initiatives.

The zoo sits within Washington Park, on the west side of downtown Portland, and is served by the Washington Park MAX light-rail station and several park entrances. It is a short drive or transit ride from central Portland and is commonly visited as part of a day in the city.

  • History and size: Founded in 1888 and relocated to Washington Park in 1959, it now operates across roughly 64 acres and is accredited by major zoo associations for conservation and education work.
  • Visitor tips: Accessible via the Washington Park MAX light-rail station and on-site parking; mornings on weekdays are generally less crowded for popular exhibits.

What to See #
