The lake and its shoreline have been used for fishing and transport for centuries and later formed part of regional canal and river networks linking to Lake Ontario. Modern recreational use expanded through the 19th and 20th centuries.

Located in central New York, the lake lies northeast of Syracuse and is surrounded by towns and villages along its shoreline; it drains toward Lake Ontario via the Oswego River system.

Oneida Lake sits between Syracuse and Utica. From Syracuse take NY-31 east or NY-31 west from nearby towns; the north shore is reached via Route 31, the south shore via I-81 and local state routes. The lake’s principal public access sites include Sylvan Beach and Verona Beach State Park.
