The mosque is noted for its large gold-covered central dome, polished marble interiors and an adjacent artificial lagoon that includes a ceremonial barge replica. Commissioned by Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien III, the mosque was completed in 1958 to serve as Brunei’s principal state mosque and to symbolize the nation’s Islamic faith and national identity. It has served continuously as a place of worship and a civic landmark since its opening.
The mosque sits near the Brunei River in the centre of Bandar Seri Begawan, close to the historic water village of Kampong Ayer and other civic landmarks. It is easily reached from the city centre by road and is visible from the riverfront.
