The Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque is the principal mosque of Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei’s capital, and a landmark completed in 1958. It is named for Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien III and is a central symbol of modern Brunei.

The mosque is noted for its large gold-covered central dome, polished marble interiors and an adjacent artificial lagoon that includes a ceremonial barge replica. The mosque’s 52-metre minaret and landscaped grounds are focal points for visitors and photographers, and the complex can accommodate thousands of worshippers during major religious events.

Commissioned by Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien III, the mosque was completed in 1958 to serve as Brunei’s principal state mosque and to symbolize the nation’s Islamic faith and national identity. It has served continuously as a place of worship and a civic landmark since its opening.

The mosque sits near the Brunei River in the centre of Bandar Seri Begawan, close to the historic water village of Kampong Ayer and other civic landmarks. It is easily reached from the city centre by road and is visible from the riverfront.

  • Best time to photograph: Photographs are most striking at golden hour when the mosque's gold-leaf dome reflects light over the adjacent lagoon.
  • Visitor access: Non-Muslim visitors can usually view the exterior and grounds; interior access is subject to prayer times and local visitor rules, so check opening hours before visiting.
