Old town of Kuldīga
Historical Site Riverside old town known for Europe's widest waterfall
Kuldīga’s cobbled streets, 17th-19th-century wooden facades and the broad Venta Rapid waterfall attract photographers; an old brick bridge and local brewery complete a compact riverside town.
The old town of Kuldīga is the historic centre of Kuldīga municipality in western Latvia, with city rights granted in 1242. It is noted for its preserved wooden and brick architecture and the large waterfall on the Venta River that runs through the town.
Along the riverfront visitors encounter the low, very wide cascade known as the Ventas Rumba, about 100-120 metres across and roughly 1-2 metres high, and riverside promenades and viewing points. The compact old town contains narrow streets, timber houses and brick buildings dating largely from the 17th to 19th centuries, with shops, cafés and small museums concentrated near the town centre.
The settlement received municipal rights in 1242 and developed through the medieval and early modern periods as an administrative and market centre. Its urban fabric reflects gradual growth over several centuries, resulting in a mixture of wooden domestic architecture and brick public buildings that survive today.
Kuldīga sits on the Venta River in the Kurzeme region of western Latvia, in Kuldīga municipality; the historic centre is immediately adjacent to the river. The town is roughly 150 km west of Riga by road and is set in a lowland river valley surrounded by farmland and small forests.
- Viewing the waterfall: Good riverside viewpoints are on both banks near the town centre; spring snowmelt and heavy rains increase flow and make the waterfall most dramatic.
- Layout and architecture: The historic centre retains many wooden and brick buildings from the 17th to 19th centuries and is compact and walkable, so most sights are reachable on foot.
What to See #
- Kuldīga historic centre: Sits along the banks of the Venta River adjacent to the town's street grid; the riverside and compact centre contain most of the surviving historic buildings and bridges.
- Ventas Rumba (Venta Rapid): A low, wide cascade on the Venta River that runs through the old town; the rapid is commonly cited as one of the widest in Europe at roughly 100-120 metres across and only a couple of metres high.
