Old Town of Galle and its Fortifications
Historical Site Colonial-era fortified town with Dutch-era ramparts
Galle’s Old Town and Dutch fortifications date to the 17th century; stone ramparts, a lighthouse and colonial buildings front the harbor. Tourists walk the walls, visit museums, galleries and seaside cafés.
The Old Town of Galle and its Fortifications is a coastal fortified complex in southern Sri Lanka built up under European colonial powers and designated a World Heritage site. It is centered on a stone-walled fort that dominates the harbor area and preserves multi-period colonial architecture.
Portuguese traders established an early fortification at Galle in the 16th century; the Dutch substantially rebuilt and expanded the fortifications in the 17th century and later British administration modified buildings and uses. The complex has been continuously occupied and altered under successive colonial and local administrations.
The fort sits on a rocky promontory at the edge of Galle city on Sri Lanka’s southwestern coast, immediately adjacent to the modern harbor and urban centre.
- Viewing point: Best light for photography is late afternoon to sunset from the western section of the ramparts where the walls meet the sea.
- Practical note: The fort remains a living neighbourhood with shops, guesthouses and residences, so expect both tourist facilities and daily local activity.
What to See #
- Fort ramparts: Stone ramparts and bastions forming the outer defensive walls that encircle the old town and offer coastal viewpoints over the harbor and Indian Ocean.
- Old Town streets: A compact grid of narrow streets lined with colonial-era buildings, small shops, cafes and museums that reflect Portuguese, Dutch and British influence.
- Galle Lighthouse and waterfront: A functioning harbor-area lighthouse and adjacent waterfront promenades that mark the seaward edge of the fort precinct.
