Old Town
Area Historic Kraków Old Town with medieval market square
Kraków’s medieval centre around the Main Market Square, St. Mary’s Basilica and narrow streets; Old Town attracts visitors for historic architecture, museums, cafés and nearby Wawel Castle.
The Old Town of Kraków is the historic centre of the city in southern Poland and one of the country’s best-preserved medieval cores, inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1978.
The area is dominated by the Main Market Square, a roughly 40,000 m² medieval plaza lined with townhouses, cafes and the long covered trading hall known as the Cloth Hall. Nearby, the brick St. Mary’s Basilica draws attention for its twin towers and a late 15th-century carved wooden altarpiece by Veit Stoss, while the northern approach is guarded by the surviving Florian Gate and the circular Barbican.
Beyond the square, the Old Town contains a dense street pattern of churches, merchant houses and museums and is encircled by the green belt of Planty Park, which occupies the site of the former city walls. The historic Royal Road runs through the core and links the market with the royal complex on Wawel Hill.
The medieval urban layout developed after Kraków received town privileges in the 13th century; the area served as Poland’s leading city and royal capital in the Middle Ages and was shaped by successive reconstructions and preservation efforts through later centuries.
The Old Town sits in central Kraków, bounded by the Planty ring park and adjacent to the Wawel hill on the Vistula River; it forms the compact historic heart of the modern city and is easily reached from Kraków’s main transport hubs.
- UNESCO inscription: Inscribed in 1978 by UNESCO as the Historic Centre of Kraków, recognising the Old Town and Wawel Hill as a single heritage site.
- Main Market Square size: Covers the medieval core centred on the Main Market Square, which measures about 40,000 square metres and is one of the largest medieval town squares in Europe.
- Veit Stoss altarpiece: Houses a late 15th-century carved wooden altarpiece by Veit Stoss in St. Mary's Basilica, considered one of Poland's major late Gothic works.
What to See #
- Main Market Square (Rynek Główny): Centred on a roughly 40,000 m² rectangular plaza laid out in the 13th century, with streets radiating away along medieval lines. The square hosts the market hall and is lined with Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque townhouses.
- St. Mary's Basilica (Kościół Mariacki): A brick Gothic church facing the Main Market Square, noted for its twin towers and a late 15th-century carved wooden altarpiece by Veit Stoss. The basilica's trumpet signal from the taller tower is sounded every hour.
- Cloth Hall (Sukiennice): A long market hall occupying the centre of the Main Market Square with arcade facades and a Renaissance loggia, rebuilt after fires in the 16th century and restored in later periods.
- Florian Gate and the Barbican: A surviving stretch of medieval city fortifications including a 14th-century gate and a cylindrical Barbican from the late medieval period, located on the northern approach to the Old Town.
- Planty Park: A ring-shaped public park formed on the site of the old city walls that encircles the historic core and defines the Old Town boundary. The park is planted with mature trees and crossed by the historic Royal Road route.
- Wawel Castle and Cathedral: A hilltop royal complex on the Vistula that forms the historic political and cultural neighbour of the Old Town, containing a cathedral and castle buildings used by Polish monarchs for centuries.
