The Old City of Sana’a is the historic core of Yemen’s capital, noted for its dense urban fabric of multi-storey tower houses and ornate earthen and brick architecture. It was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986 for the quality and preservation of its traditional urban ensemble.
The area contains narrow streets, markets (souqs), mosques and distinctive multi-storey homes with decorative façades built over many centuries. Many buildings date from the medieval and early modern periods and the city has been an important regional centre for trade and administration.
The Old City has experienced damage and conservation challenges during recent years of conflict, affecting both residents and visitors and prompting international concern for its heritage.
Geographically the Old City sits within the modern metropolis of Sana’a on a high Yemeni plateau at over 2,000 metres above sea level, and it forms the historic heart of the Amanat al Asimah administrative area.
- UNESCO status: Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986 for its unique urban fabric of multi-storey earthen architecture and dense medieval city plan.
- Security and access: Conservation and visitor access have been severely affected by conflict and security concerns in recent years, so on-the-ground conditions and accessibility can be unpredictable.
