Old Head of Kinsale is a rocky promontory on the southern coast of County Cork, Ireland, near the town of Kinsale. It is noted for its lighthouse and the golf course that occupies the narrow tip of the headland.

A narrow spit of land projects into the Atlantic and includes an 18-hole championship golf course that places several holes on the promontory. The lighthouse sits on the extremity and the headland provides coastal views and seabird habitat. The area is also known for maritime history and shipwrecks offshore.

The headland has long served maritime navigation and local fishing activities; the lighthouse and coastal features reflect that role. The location gained wider historical attention when the ocean liner RMS Lusitania was torpedoed and sank nearby in 1915.

Sited on the south coast of County Cork, the headland lies immediately adjacent to the town of Kinsale and projects into the Atlantic Ocean, forming a prominent coastal landmark on the Irish coastline.

  • Lusitania sinking: The RMS Lusitania was torpedoed and sank on 7 May 1915 approximately off the headland, making the surrounding waters historically significant.
  • Access restrictions: Much of the promontory is private property and the golf club controls access to the tip, so public access to some viewpoints is restricted.

What to See #

  • Old Head Lighthouse: Small lighthouse sits at the tip of the promontory and marks the headland for local shipping; the structure and access are separate from the golf course facilities.
  • Old Head Golf Links: An 18-hole championship golf course occupies much of the promontory and places several holes along exposed cliffs; membership and visitor access are controlled by the club.
